The ClinchFX
TxFuzz
I have never, in the past, been a fan of Fuzz. In 2007, a friend who is a pedal enthusiast talked me into building a Silicon Fuzz Face style pedal, just to mess about with. The pedal, even when tarted up with some of the favourite mods from around the net, still didn’t invoke a heap of love from me, but it was better than it had started out. By this time, I was hooked by the challenge, so I began looking for my own ways of taming the somewhat unpredictable nature of the Fuzz Face. I found a simple and elegant solution, and was happy with the result.
The taming of the Fuzz Face circuit involved some “outside the box” thinking. As all fuzz addicts know, Silicon versions of the Fuzz face tend to have a harsh “solid state” sound. In the Blue Classic design, I used transformers to mellow out the harshness of overdriven silicon transistors. It worked very well in the Blue Classic, so why not try transformer coupling in a fuzz.
Using transformer coupling solved one of the classic Fuzz Face problems, the compromise between bias and signal. It allowed me to separately optimise DC(Bias) conditions and AC(signal) conditions by choosing a transformer with the right ratio between coil resistance and impedance.
The ClinchFX TxFuzz has exceeded all of my expectations. It can do anything from Clean Boost with some “flavour” to Overdrive, to Distortion, to Saturated Fuzz with amazing Sustain, just using the fuzz control and guitar volume. The taming of the electronics ensures that the TxFuzz will clean up with reduced guitar volume, and it responds well to playing dynamics.
The USD price is $179, plus $30 postage, a total of $209.
